Card 23. Band 9 Answer on Meeting a time when you were surprised by something, speaking Part 2 & 3

 Part 2

Describe a time when you were surprised by something.

One time when I was genuinely surprised was when I received an unexpected award at an academic conference. This occurred last year during the Annual Linguistics and Language Education Conference held in Baku. I had attended the conference to present a paper on innovative language teaching methodologies.

The surprise happened on the final day of the conference, during the closing ceremony. As I sat in the audience, the conference chair began announcing the recipients of various awards. To my astonishment, I heard my name called out for the “Excellence in Language Education” award. I was completely unprepared for this recognition, as I had not been informed beforehand.

My reaction was a mix of shock, joy, and immense pride. I was initially stunned and needed a moment to process what had happened. As I walked up to the stage to receive the award, I felt a surge of happiness and gratitude. The audience’s applause and the warm congratulations from my peers added to the emotional impact of the moment.

This was particularly surprising because I was not aware that my work had been nominated for any awards. Additionally, the conference was highly competitive, with many distinguished scholars presenting their research. Receiving this award was a validation of my efforts and contributions to the field of language education.

I felt deeply honored and appreciated by this surprise. It reinforced my passion for teaching and research, motivating me to continue striving for excellence. The experience also reminded me of the importance of recognition and how it can inspire individuals to achieve even greater heights in their professional endeavors.

 Part 3

1. Why do people enjoy surprises?

People enjoy surprises because they introduce an element of novelty and excitement into their lives. Surprises break the monotony of daily routines and provide a sense of adventure. They also show that someone cares enough to make an effort to create a special moment, which can make the recipient feel valued and appreciated. Additionally, surprises often create lasting memories that can bring joy and fondness when recalled.

2. What are the benefits and drawbacks of surprises?

The benefits of surprises include increased happiness, the strengthening of relationships, and the creation of memorable experiences. Surprises can also stimulate the mind by introducing unexpected elements, which can be refreshing and invigorating. However, the drawbacks include the potential for misinterpretation or unwanted surprises, which can cause stress or discomfort. Some people may not enjoy the feeling of being unprepared or out of control, and poorly executed surprises can lead to disappointment or embarrassment.

3. How can surprises strengthen relationships?

Surprises can strengthen relationships by demonstrating thoughtfulness and care. When someone goes out of their way to plan a surprise, it shows that they have considered the other person’s likes, dislikes, and preferences. This level of attentiveness can deepen the emotional bond and create a sense of connection. Shared moments of joy and excitement from surprises can also foster positive memories and reinforce the relationship.

4. Do you think surprises are more appreciated by children or adults? Why?

Surprises are often more appreciated by children because they tend to experience emotions more openly and vividly. For children, the element of surprise can be magical and enchanting, sparking their imagination and sense of wonder. Adults, on the other hand, may have more complex emotional responses and might be more reserved or skeptical about surprises. However, thoughtful and well-executed surprises can be deeply appreciated by adults as well, especially when they align with their interests or celebrate significant milestones.

5. How can one plan a good surprise for someone?

To plan a good surprise, one should start by understanding the preferences and interests of the person being surprised. Attention to detail is crucial, as is careful planning and timing. Ensuring that the surprise will be a positive experience for the recipient is essential. It’s also important to maintain secrecy and discretion to preserve the element of surprise. Coordinating with others who know the person well can help in planning and execution. Lastly, having a backup plan in case something goes wrong can ensure that the surprise remains enjoyable.

6. What are some memorable surprises you have heard about or experienced?

One memorable surprise I experienced was receiving an unexpected award at an academic conference, which left me feeling deeply honored and motivated. Another unforgettable surprise was when a friend of mine proposed to his partner during a scenic hot air balloon ride, creating a magical and unique moment. I have also heard of surprise family reunions, where loved ones travel from afar to reconnect, resulting in heartwarming and emotional moments. These surprises stand out because of the effort, planning, and deep emotional impact they have on those involved.
